Page 1 of 8 Chapter Election ResultsIn January of 2009 the SW Virginia Chapter of the USGBC held elections for Chapter Board Members. Below are the bios of election winners. Congratulations to all!Steve Sunderman is 2009 Board Chair of the USGBC SW Virginia Chapter. He is a Virginia licensed architect and partner in RRMM Architects where he is Director of Higher Education. He holds National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) certification and is a LEED (2.0) Accredited Professional. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with both a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design degrees. Steve has over 38 years of diversified architectural experience, including extensive energy and utility auditing work throughout the United States and the Middle East. Since the early 1970's he has promoted alternative energy, conservation and environmental design. Steve is deeply committed to helping create a healthier planet by positively impacting our built environment through design and construction of high-performance buildings and via his involvement in the USGBC and multi-media pursuits, encourage builders, designers, manufacturers as well as the general public to embrace sustainable building practices as a means to implement a strategy of change for our built environment. Nell Boyle, Past Board Chair, is a LEED AP and is employed by Breakell Inc. as the Director of Sustainable Practices. Her responsibilities include monitoring LEED projects, enforcing sustainable construction practices in the field and working with the office staff to reduce the carbon footprint of the company. Prior to her position at Breakell Inc was an active volunteer with the C2C Home Competition and later served as the Executive Director of C2C Home, LLC. In addition to her numerous speaking engagements and participation in green events across the region, Nell is a member of the Clean and Green Business Coalition with City of Roanoke Council Member Gwen Mason and serves on the board of Association of Energy Conservation Professionals- Education Service. Dick Pennock has worked in Virginia and Maryland for 35 years as a structural engineer. He has long been interested in sustainable design and is a founding member of the Southwest Virginia Chapter of the US Green Building Council. He has served for the past two years as a Board Member and as Membership Chair for the Chapter. Sean McGinnis is the Chair of the Education Committee for the Chapter. This committee develops and coordinates Chapter educational programs including LEED workshops. Sean is the Director of the Green Engineering Program at Virginia Tech. This program works across all engineering disciplines and strives to raise awareness and teach skills to students regarding the environmental impacts of engineering design and practice. Sean teaches classes at VT on sustainability, life cycle assessment, and materials selection/design. He is also involved with the Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition and has worked with the City of Roanoke, Roanoke County, and Salem to determine their carbon emissions and energy baselines. Sean lives in Roanoke with his wife and 2 daughters. Adam Markwood serves as the Chapter Treasurer. Adam graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Public and Urban Affairs. Immediately following graduation, he acquired a position at the New River Valley Planning District Commission, where he co-authored several policy analyses and assisted in the coordination of a number of regional sustainability initiatives. This introduction to environmental planning led him to the private sector at Wallace Roberts and Todd, LLC, a national planning and architecture firm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here he was able to participate on a number of projects, including LEED registered buildings, sustainable urban design plans and large-scale green plans. After growing his skill set at WRT, Adam moved on to a small architecture firm in Southwest Virginia where he provided project quality control assistance and managed the LEED certification process for the Claude Moore Education Complex. As Vice President of Preservation and Environment for Brian Wishneff & Associates, he concentrates most of his time on the environmental side of the company through pursuing new initiatives including LEED certification management, NAHB Green Home Verification, green building financing, renewable energy tax credit projects and historic preservation. Adam is a LEED Accredited Professional, an NAHB Green Home Verifier and is on the Roanoke City Fair Housing Board. James Sledd currently serves as the Chapter Secretary and assists with the website. James joined AECOM in March 2008 as a Project Manager/Commissioning Authority focusing on building systems commissioning and sustainable design. James has 7 years of previous third-party commissioning experience with Engineering Economics, Inc. and over 13 years of design experience, with SFCS, Inc. In March 2005, James started CxGreen, an online blog focused on bringing the Commissioning (Cx) and Sustainable Design (Green) Communities Together. Acting both as a Commissioning Authority, mechanical designer and web manager within the HVAC Industry, gives James a unique perspective on the technology issues that affect our Industry. James holds degrees in both mechanical engineering and architecture from Virginia Western Community College. James is a Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Document Technologist (CDT). Obviously, James enjoys working on the Internet. He also enjoys spending time with his family. Trina Mastran was recently elected to the USGBC SW Virginia Chapter and serves as the Newsletter Committee Chair. Trina has over 19 years working in the environmental arena. Trina started her career out working in the area of environmental housing and code enforcement and in 1992 received a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech. She has served as a regulator, a Project Engineer and Public Works Director for rural communities. She currently is the Director of Wastewater Treatment and the Erosion and Sediment Control Co- Administrator for the City of Buena Vista. Trina currently serves on the Board of the American Water Works Association as Director at Large, the Water For People Local Relations Committee, Tech’s Environmental and Water Resources Graduate Department Advisory Board. Trina has a lifelong interest in both the environment and housing and is particularly interested in sustainable design for rural low-income communities. Nick Safay currently serves as the Southeast Regional Council Representative where he is Chair of it Diversity and Social Equity Committee. Nick received a degree in Business Administration from Southern Vermont College in Bennington, VT and designed his own degree combining Sustainable Development and Socially Responsible Management at The School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT. For the past two years, Nick has worked with Appalachian Sustainable Development in Abingdon, VA. He is ASD marketer for its Sustainable Woods program and committed to sustainable forestry efforts worldwide. Nick is the secretary and founding member of the Holston Valley Green Building Coalition serving deep southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. Mark Garland is the Community Outreach Committee Chair. He is a Roanoke, VA native and graduate from Virginia Tech in Civil & Environmental Engineering. Mark is a LEED (2.0) Accredited Professional and is currently the Green Building Coordinator and a Civil Engineer for the architectural/ engineering firm Spectrum Design, P.C. As Green Building Coordinator, he assists owners and project design teams in selecting energy performance, air quality, building material and other environmental goals and works to implement the goals throughout an entire project. As Civil Engineer, he designs project site plans, stormwater management systems and wastewater treatment systems and has a particular interest in constructed wetlands, bioretention, and other forms of phytoremediation. Colin Arnold — Chair of the Program Committee is the Director of Community Design Studio, LLC (CDS) and Vice President of Architecture for Community Housing Partners Corporation (CHP). As Director of CDS, Colin provides design services to a range of community minded organizations, thus improving environmental performance, durability and cost effectiveness of affordable housing in Virginia. Colin is a LEED Accredited Professional, a member of AIA, holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from Texas A&M and a master’s in Architecture from Virginia Tech. He spent several years working for architecture firms in the Roanoke Valley region before joining CHP in 2001 as a Rose Architectural Fellow. In 2002, CHP created the Community Design Studio. Colin also serves as a Board Member on the Virginia Sustainable Building Network and the Association for Community Design Boards. Colin resides in Roanoke with his wife and three daughters. |
