What is LEED®?
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED® is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED® gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED® promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

There are nine different LEED® rating systems that can be applied depending on the type of building project. Each rating system has requirements that are specific to that particular building project.

The rating systems are as follows: US Green Building Council Southwest Virginia | What is Leed
  • New Construction
  • Existing Buildings
  • Commercial Interiors
  • Core & Shell
  • Schools
  • Retail
  • Healthcare
  • Homes
  • Neighborhood Development

Become a LEED® Accredited Professional

LEED® Professional Accreditation distinguishes individuals with detailed knowledge of LEED® project certification requirements and processes and a command of integrated design principles. LEED® accreditation is awarded to building industry practitioners who successfully demonstrate these proficiencies on a comprehensive exam. While the U.S. Green Building Council handles the development of the LEED® Rating System and offers LEED®-based education programs, the LEED® Professional Accreditation program is independently administered under the Green Building Certification Institute to allow for balanced, objective management of the credential. GBCI manages all aspects of the LEED® Professional Accreditation program including exam development, registration, and delivery.
