Nell Boyle, LEED AP | Advisory Committee, USGBC Southwest Virginia Chapter Nell Boyle is a founding Director of the U.S. Green Building Council Southwest Virginia (USGBC SWVA) Chapter Chair. She served as Chapter Chair from mid-2007 through December 2008. Nell still remains active on the board serving as the Southeast Regional Council Chapter Representative and Chair, and is also a member of the National USGBC Steering Committee. In addition to her other responsibilities with the USGBC SWVA Boyle served on the team that developed the regional standards for the LEED® 2009 edition for Southwest Virginia. Professionally, Boyle is currently employed as the Director of Sustainable Practices at Breakell Inc., General Contractors in Roanoke, Virginia. Ms. Boyle’s responsibilities are to serve as an internal resource for environmental practices throughout the company. On the jobsite she is responsible for training and implementing procedures that enforce appropriate sustainable construction practices. Administratively, she manages all LEED® paperwork and protocol for the company and conducts continuing education to all the entire company staff regarding sustainable practices in the office and the environment. Over the last five years Ms. Boyle has served as a leader in the community as a green building advocate. Her previous position was as the Executive Director of C2C Home, LLC. At C2C Home she directed the construction phase of one of the final entries of the internationally renowned design competition. This successful design competition was based on the work of William McDonough and his popular book Cradle-to-Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things and received over 600 hundred entries from all over the globe. Ms. Boyle is involved with numerous environmental activities including, but not limited to; the USGBC Southwest Virginia Board Chair, the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals Educational Services (AECP-ES) Board of Directors, the Clean and Green Business Coalition in partnership with Roanoke City Council Member Gwen Mason to advocate sustainable practices in local businesses and the Roanoke County’s RC Clear Advisory committee to reduce greenhouse gases.
Monica Rokicki-Guajardo, LEED APMonica Rokicki-Guajardo, LEED AP BD+C, BPI, EPS has served the chapter as Communications Chair (2009), Vice Chair of the Board (2009) and Chair of the Board of Directors (2010). In 2010, she founded Better Building Works, LLC, Design and Energy Consultants, in Roanoke, Virginia. Her focus on building performance services grew out of her experience as the Director of Design & Sustainability at LEED® AP at Balzer & Associates, Inc where worked since 2001. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Houston, and has won prizes in three international design competitions. From 1996- 2001 she was Executive Director of the International Center for the Solution of Environmental Problems (ICSEP) in Houston, a non-profit scientific and educational organization with 43 statured scientist affiliates worldwide. While at ICSEP, she helped found the Citizen's League for Environmental Action Now (CLEAN) and organized a 'Bucket Brigade' which provided equipment, methodology and management for neighborhood air-monitoring coordinated with several other non-profit organizations and the EPA. Monica is a former Director for the Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction and is Co-Founder of the Vesper Club. Her appreciation for clear argument, a scientific basis for practical knowledge and respect for the environment inform her passion for "architecture that listens."

Steve Sunderman, AIA, LEED AP Steve Sunderman is President of Terrazia PC, a high performance building consultancy located in Roanoke, VA. He is a licensed architect, LEED Accredited Professional with Building Design + Construction Specialty and Building Performance Institute Analyst. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design degrees. His many years of diversified architectural experience include extensive design, project management and energy/utility audit consulting for a wide variety of building types throughout the United States and the Middle East. He has promoted alternative energy, conservation measures and equitable environmental design since the early 1970's.

Steve is committed to helping create a healthier planet by implementing a strategy of change for our built environment to achieve the triple bottom line that saves money, improves people's lives and ensures a sustainable future.

Steve's passion for promoting sustainable environments led him to become deeply involved in the US Green Building Council Southwest Virginia chapter where he has served on the board of directors since 2008 in roles as 2008 Vice Chair, 2009 Chair, 2010-2011 Southeast Regional Committee (SERC) Representative and 2009-2011 Green Schools Committee Chair. In 2011 he was elected to the first national USGBC Center for Green Schools Committee Cabinet.

Bill WhiteBill White is a native of Richmond, Virginia and a Virginia Tech graduate. He is a Virginia Class "A" building contractor and is a licensed architect in six mid Atlantic states. He is a LEED AP with specialty, BD+C, and has been a LEED AP since 2004. He is the architect and LEED administrator for two Virginia projects seeking LEED Silver, currently in design or under construction. Bill has attended two Green Build international conferences one in Chicago and the other in Toronto.

Bill is active in southwest Virginia's design and construction community where he recently served a two year term as President of AIA Blue Ridge. He is the senior architect in the Radford office of Thompson & Litton.

Bill is a pilot and vice president of Upper Holston Aviation. He is an instructor at OMAC Oriental Martial Arts College, a national martial arts school and holds first don black belt in taekwondo.

As designer and architect, his projects include the Montgomery County Courthouse, Christiansburg, Va., The William Byrd Retirement Community, Richmond, Va., and The Franklin Center, Rocky Mount, Va. among others.

 
Josh Holloway joined Christiansburg-based Community Design Studio in January 2007 and is currently a Project Manager. He graduated with his Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2005 and is a LEED Accredited Professional with Building Design + Construction Specialty (LEEP AP/BD+C).  He is a Virginia licensed Lead Risk Assessor and a RESNET certified HERS rater.

Josh has experience with LEED for Homes, ENERGY STAR, and EarthCraft certified single family home new construction and multifamily rehabilitation.  With his knowledge of the green building industry, he often provides tours and presentations on sustainably built homes, construction materials, and techniques.  Josh is committed to environmental performance, durability, and cost effectiveness within the housing industry and to promoting competent, socially responsible building practices. 

Josh is currently working to complete the Architect Registration Examinations (ARE) and in his free time, Josh attends and works with an on-campus ministry at Virginia Tech.
